The spread of Smartphones

About half of the world’s smartphones will be using Google’s Android operating system by the end of 2012, according to the research firm Gartner.

Worldwide smartphone sales are expected to reach 468m units in 2011 – a 57.7% increase on 2010. The explosive growth in affordable smartphones will see annual sales top 1.1bn by 2015, Gartner said. Sales of PCs, by comparison, will reach 387m this year, a 10.5% increase on 2010, the research firm predicted last month .

By 2015, Android will enjoy a 48.8% share of the market, ahead of Windows Phone 7 on 19.5%, iOS on 17.2% and BlackBerry on 11.1%. Nokia’s once-dominant Symbian will shrink to 0.1% of the market in this period, as its Finnish maker switches to Windows Phone 7 on higher-end handsets.

Turn an iPad into an Interactive Whiteboard

this is almost enough to tempt me into getting an iPad. But also when talking to Jenny Hughes she pointed out a big flaw in Interactive Whiteboard design in that for younger kids many of them cannot actually reach the screen. they could of course, reach an iPad.

My experiments this evening with the Air Display ($10) application for iPad confirm what I’ve suspected for some time: Inexpensive mobile applications (relative to the cost of an IWB) can transform these devices INTO functional IWBs with many more benefits as well as capabilities. In this post, I’ll highlight some of the applications which can do this for Apple’s iPad, based on a phenomenal set of tutorial videos (over 52 minutes worth) shared recently by Tim Tyson. If you still have IWBs in your school technology plan, put your planning on hold. I’m hoping the ideas I share in this post will convince you to put those precious dollars toward iPads for students and teachers INSTEAD of an expensive device (an IWB) that will stay mounted at the front of a classroom gathering dust.

Open Attribute

I have been looking for something like this for ages. If you use Creative Commons materials – and most bloggers do – this is a ‘must have; plug in.

The problem: Creative Commons licensed content is awesome, but attributing it properly can be difficult and confusing. The first rule for re-using openly licensed content is that you have to properly attribute the creator. There are specific requirements for what needs to go into that attribution, but those requirements can be confusing and hard to find.

The solution: A simple tool everyone can use to do the right thing with the click of a button. That’s why we’re building Open Attribute, a suite of tools that makes it ridiculously simple for anyone to copy and paste the correct attribution for any CC licensed work. These tools will query the metadata around a CC-licensed object and produce a properly formatted attribution that users can copy and paste wherever they need to.

Do we have to become dissident? Do we have to re-imagine higher education as higher learning beyond the institution, dissolved into community? In the face of the crisis, where do we find hope?

Academics have already relinquished many vital opportunities to remake universities into institutions for learning and human development. But as the first new budget cuts materialise and universities begin enforcing changes to accommodate and legitimise the government’s policies, there will be other openings for organising new, not-yet-imagined forms of collective resistance to the agenda. We are learning from our students that such work is neither easy nor impossible. We are also learning that such serious attacks on public education, critical disciplines and research, non-hegemonic epistemologies and democratic life, can only be met with equally as serious acts of resistance – which may of course take a plurality of different forms.

Apps overhyped? – I think so

I wonder if the current App craze has been overhyped. And as better mobile browsers come out – plus increased bandwidth and html5 – we may return to the open world of the web as the way of seeking and suing information and sharing knowledge. This report tends to suggest that the use of Apps and especially paying for information – may not be so popular as the mobile and media industries would like us to think.

One of the newest forms of on-the-go local news consumption, mobile applications, are just beginning to take hold among mobile device owners. Just 13% of all mobile device owners report having an app that helps them get local information or news, which represents 11% of the total American adult population. Thus, while almost half of adults get local news on mobile devices, just 1 in 10 use apps to do so. Call it the “app gap.”

According to the survey, just 10% of adults who use mobile apps to connect to local news and information pay for those apps. This amounts to just 1% of all adults. Overall, 36% of adults report paying for some form of local news, the vast majority paying for local print newspaper subscriptions.

Journalism and blogging

This quote from the Guardian newspaper is of Jay Rosen talking at SXSF. I am not sure if it really gets to the point. It is not to me so much of a competition between blogging journalist or traditional journalists (surely we have convergence taking place) but rather of the existence of multiple information and knowledge flows through he ability of anyone to publish – even if they do not have the patronage of a newspaper proprietor.

Mainstream journalists’ antagonism towards bloggers, he suggested, was sustained by the huge stress they find themselves under, which stems from five developments:

1. The collapsing economic model of newspapers.

2. Journalists having to face new kinds of competition.

3. A shift in power to the audience.

4. New patterns of information flow in which information moves horizontally from citizen to citizen as efficiently as vertically.

5. Erosion of trust and related loss of authority.

Sneering at bloggers was a way journalists avoided confronting these developments. In short “this is fucking neurotic.”

The executive summary: There’s data we have which isn’t in any way confidential which is of use to our members, visitors, and the public. If we make the data available in a structured way with a
license which allows reuse
then our members, or anyone else, can build tools on top of it without needless bureaucracy. That’s common sense.
We call it “Open Data”.

We publish our data in RDF format and link our identifiers to other sites in the Linked Open Data Web. This makes it much eaiser to merge data from multiple sources and other sites can link their datasets up with ours. Like the HTML Web, the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts, that’s “Linked Data”.

Cultral globalisation and music, film and software piracy

I’ve not read this report. But it is certainly high on my list of reading. The report on ‘Media Piracy in Emerging Economies’ claims to be the first independent, large-scale study of music, film and software piracy in emerging economies, with a focus on Brazil, India, Russia, South Africa, Mexico and Bolivia. The report has been produced by the Social Science Research Council based in New York. As the report points out enforcement has not worked and commercial pirates and transnational smugglers face the same dilemma as the legal industry: how to compete with free.
Gilberto Gil, musician and former Brazilian minister of culture says “This remarkable study should be required reading for anyone concerned with copyright and enforcement, or with the challenges of cultural globalization.”

Based on three years of work by some thirty-five researchers, Media Piracy in Emerging Economies tells two overarching stories: one tracing the explosive growth of piracy as digital technologies became cheap and ubiquitous around the world, and another following the growth of industry lobbies that have reshaped laws and law enforcement around copyright protection. The report argues that these efforts have largely failed, and that the problem of piracy is better conceived as a failure of affordable access to media in legal markets.

“The choice,” said Joe Karaganis, director of the project, “isn’t between high piracy and low piracy in most media markets. The choice, rather, is between high-piracy, high-price markets and high-piracy, low price markets. Our work shows that media businesses can survive in both environments, and that developing countries have a strong interest in promoting the latter. This problem has little to do with enforcement and a lot to do with fostering competition.”

Trusted Data Hubs?

Interesting article on the use of data by newspapers. i am not sure if I agree with the thrust of the argument about trust. trust seems to me a rather nebulous concept in the way it is being used for web development initiatives.

But I certainly agree about the growing importance of data and sense making around such data.

There is hope. What we are seeing at The Guardian, The New York Times and some others are the early signs of a transformation. Right now, there are only a few stories based on deep data analysis in stream of more traditional reporting. But some journalists already see that exploring data provides an important opportunity, and the practice is growing. From the use of standard deviation to show that movies are getting more polarizing to setting up pseudo-correlation analysis and bulk geocoding to spot the representatives claiming more than others or building indexes on the fly, data and stats are getting sexier by the day.

    Forbes reports that Microsoft has obtained a patent for a “conversational chatbot of a specific person” created from images, recordings, participation in social networks, emails, letters, etc., coupled with the possible generation of a 2D or 3D model of the person.


    Racial bias in algorithms

    This week, Twitter apologised for racial bias within its image-cropping algorithm. The feature is designed to automatically crop images to highlight focal points – including faces. But, Twitter users discovered that, in practice, white faces were focused on, and black faces were cropped out. And, Twitter isn’t the only platform struggling with its algorithm – YouTube has also announced plans to bring back higher levels of human moderation for removing content, after its AI-centred approach resulted in over-censorship, with videos being removed at far higher rates than with human moderators.


    Gap between rich and poor university students widest for 12 years

    The gap between poor students and their more affluent peers attending university has widened to its largest point for 12 years, according to data published by the Department for Education (DfE).

    Better-off pupils are significantly more likely to go to university than their more disadvantaged peers. And the gap between the two groups – 18.8 percentage points – is the widest it’s been since 2006/07.

    The latest statistics show that 26.3% of pupils eligible for FSMs went on to university in 2018/19, compared with 45.1% of those who did not receive free meals. Only 12.7% of white British males who were eligible for FSMs went to university by the age of 19. The progression rate has fallen slightly for the first time since 2011/12, according to the DfE analysis.


    Quality Training

    From Raconteur. A recent report by global learning consultancy Kineo examined the learning intentions of 8,000 employees across 13 different industries. It found a huge gap between the quality of training offered and the needs of employees. Of those surveyed, 85 per cent said they , with only 16 per cent of employees finding the learning programmes offered by their employers effective.
