Na początku tego roku pisałam tutaj o barcampach i o tym, że jak na razie podobne inicjatywy w Polsce nie są widoczne. No i proszę – co za wspaniała niespodzianka – kilka miesięcy potem zostaje organizowany barcamp edukacyjny w Polsce – Educamp.pl.

Educamp.pl  to “nieformalne, otwarte, interaktywne spotkanie ludzi związanych z nowoczesną edukacją, Internetem i technologiami wspierającymi szkolenia. Celem spotkania jest integracja środowiska, wymiana doświadczeń i pomysłów oraz dobra zabawa.”

Zobaczcie koniecznie strone: http://www.educamp.pl/ – szykuje się naprawde świetny barcamp! Odbedzie się on 29 września 2010 w Krakowie o godzinie 18:00 w Drukarni Jazz Club.

Oto zasady uczestnictwa „spotkanie podlega trzem generalnym zasadom: (1)profesjonalne, (2)nieformalne, (3)otwarte. Profesjonalne, bo zapraszamy ekspertów, prezentujemy rozwiązania, promujemy idee i ułatwiamy nawiązywanie kontaktów. Nieformalne, bo przy wejściu obcinamy krawaty, spotykamy się w knajpie i przede wszystkim romawiamy. Otwarte, bo uczestnictwo nic nie kosztuje, może przyjść każdy i może się nieźle bawić.“

Są już pierwsze zgłoszenia na sesje pechakucha:

  • Wykorzystanie nowoczesnych form edukacji w nauczaniu języków obcych.
  • „World of Processes“ – koncepcja otwartego projektu szkoleniowego.
  • · „Wirtualizacja w zadalnym nauczaniu.“

Jest fotograf, jest DJ, którego można posłuchać już online, będą prezentować m.in. Rainer Hartlep, Marek Hyla, Jarosław Lipszyc, Renata Maroszek, Mateusz Tułecki.

Organizatorzy zwracają się do wszystkich zainteresowanych z prośbą o pomoc w:

2. Rozpropagowaniu idei spotkania via Wszystkie znane kanały komunikacji…

Ja też się dołączam do tej prośby. Naprawdę warto propagować i wspierać takie inicjatywy!

Barcampy

W zeszłym tygodniu byłam na nietypowej konferencji, na educampie w Hamburgu, ktróry jest formą barcampu. BarCampy, podobnie jak mówi Wikipedia (apropos: ktoś powinien zaktualizować ten artykuł ;-)) to otwarte i interaktywne spotkania dotyczące określonych tematów. Takie nietypowe konferencje nazywane są też „nie-konferensjami“. Chodzi w nich o to, aby w przeciwieństwie do tradycyjnych konferencji, które są sztywne i nudne, umożliwić uczestnikom aktywne branie udziału i  współstwarzanie konferencji.

Są m.in. politcampy dotyczące spraw politycznych,  socialcampy, dotyczace tematów socjanych, bibcampy dla bibliotekarzy, foocampy dla hackerów, musiccampy, genercampy, artcampy, gamecampy, photocampy no i są też educampy związane z edukacją.

Celem takich barcampów jest wymiana doświadczeń i pomysłów, dyskusje i prezentacje  w otwartej i nieformalnej atmosferze. Program barcampu układają zwykle sami uczestnicy, tzn. podczas barcampu każdy może zaproponować jakiś temat i jeżeli znajdzie wystarczająco dużo uczestników, zorganizować sesję. Educamp w Hamburgu połączył jednak takie demokratyczne układanie programu z zaplanowaną dyskusją, do której zaproszeni zostali znani i raczej „tradycyjni“ profesorowie. W barcampach uczestniczą przeważnie bardzo różni ludzie, zacząwszy od profesorów, poprzez managerów, pracowników firm, naukowców, nauczycieli do studentów i uczni. I własnie o to chodzi w barcampach. Chodzi o to, aby taka heterogeniczna mieszanka mogła spojrzeć na interesujące ją tematy i problemy z  różnych perspektyw i przez to znaleść nowe drogi, nowe metody, nowe pomysły itd. Na barcampach uczestnicy używają chętnie twittera.  Tweety wyświetla na twitterwall (ekranie). Twittuje się na różne sposoby, można coś komentować, wyrażać swoje zdanie, zadawać pytanie itd. Przez to praktycznie każdy uczestnik ma możliwość aktywnie się udzielać i wpływać na rozwój sytuacji. No i do tego jest dobra zabawa 🙂

A co słychać na temat barcampów w Polsce? Znalazłam właśnie stronę na której wymienione są spotkania barcampowe w Polsce. Mam wrażenie, że wiekszość tych barcampów dotyczy tematów informatycznych lub biznesowych. Np. ogólnopolski barcamp skierowany był do startup’ów internetowych.

Some thoughts on Educamp09

As promised yesterday, some more thoughts on the Educamp09 conference held last weekend in Ilmenau in Germany.

The overwhelming memory is of the atmosphere and buzz around the event. much of the reason for this was the superb organisation. Just small things really – a selection of different coffee, cartons of juice available throughout the conference. Great lighting and sofas to sit on to chat. Good music -all that kind of thing.

Another thing was the tech. This was not just a conference – it was an event. Every session was streamed out live. The sessions with online presenters worked. Big screens projecting the twitter stream. Very cool.

A lot of this was because it was an unconference. Apart from the opening panel discussion and a couple of invited international speakers, all the sessions were negotiated on the Saturday morning. No abstracts, no agonising over whether papers would be accepted. And the programme was simply filled in on the spot on a computer and then projected all over the conference spaces. No fiddling around to find out what session was where (Alt-C take note). And it was run by a volunteer organisation relying on (probably too small) sponsorship for funding. No funding bodies to keep on board, no policy bodies who had to have their egos massaged. A conference for the community run by the community.

There were no fees (Alt-C, Educa On-line – take note again). One result of this is that the conference was accessible to students and to teachers. The largest grouping at Educamp were teachers. And that brings another perspective to discussions on technology. The teachers came to share their own experiences and to learn as part of their practice.

If course the confernce was aided by the growing buzz around Web 2.0 and learning in the German speaking countries. I personally suspect that this is helped by the previous relatively low level of technology adoption in education. there is less baggage in the form of legacy technologies to be overcome.

The buzzwords from the confernce were “Bildung Hacken“. What is that? It is a term coming out of the Hacking Education confernce held in New York on March 10. However, Bildung Hacken is not really a precise translation – it means more in German – anyone care to attempt a translation / explanation?

The next Educamp is planned for Graz, in November I think. I am planning to be there. But here is a thought. Why not a UK based Educamp – and if we were to hold it at the same time we could link the two conferences electronically.

Open education – Spring programme

It is the season of predictions for 2009. Here is mine – 2009 will be the year of Open Education. Seminars, workshops, lectures, courses – all available on line and for free. I am not sere I trust my  star-gazing ability – or my ability to predict technology development trends for that matter – so we are doing our best to make sure it comes true by organising a series of events ourselves.

Over the next few days I will be posting details of a whole series of different events. First up, here is the spring Open Seminar series being organised by the JISC Evolve network in collaboration with the German Educamp Network who are staging a series of conferences around Web2.0 social software and elearning. is organising the third EduCamp in Germany.

ThoughtFest 09

Thought Fest is a two-day event being organized by Pontydysgu with the support of the JISC Evolve network and
the European Mature-IP project.

The event will bring together researchers in Technology Enhanced Learning in an open forum to debate the current issues surrounding educational technologies and discuss how and where research impacts on practice and where practice drives research.

Whilst there will be keynotes by Graham Attwell and Steven Warburton, Thought Fest is a user driven workshop and we welcome ideas for sessions, demontsrations activities. Accomodation and food for free – you juts have to pay for your travel.

Educamp
April 17th – 19th

What is the EduCamp all about?
The EduCamp-Network (http://educamp.mixxt.de/) is organising the third EduCamp in Germany. This will also be the first international EduCamp. The event will take place from the 17th to the 19th of April, 2009 in Ilmenau, Thuringia. Details of previous EduCamps can be found at http://educamp.mixxt.de.

There will be some initial structure for the programme, but after the panel discussion on Friday, the EduCamp will be organized as a barcamp. Sessions and workshops will be organised by participants at the beginning of the event. On Sunday the topic under discussion is “EduOpenSpace” (OpenSpace?). Participants will form clusters to discuss some of the related topics.

Topics
The issue of how we can use social software, such as weblogs, podcasts, wikis, micro-blogging, VoIP in education in schools, universities and companies is a subject attracting much interest. Developing connections to other people and joining learning networks is central to the Information society. Mulitple knowledge resources all access to the exchange of experiences and the construction of knowledge.

The last EduCamps meeting discussed ‘Teaching and Learning 2.0’. This meeting will continue those discussions.

EduCamp is an open event and everyone interested in welcome to attend. It will take place at the Humboldtbau at the Technical University of Ilmenau.

The main topics for the EduCamp are Corporate Learning 2.0 and e-learning in schools or universities. Other topics include the use of E-Portfolios, Digital games and virtual worlds in education. In line with the idea of barcamp, everyone is invited to propose their own topics for discussion.

    Cyborg patented?

    Forbes reports that Microsoft has obtained a patent for a “conversational chatbot of a specific person” created from images, recordings, participation in social networks, emails, letters, etc., coupled with the possible generation of a 2D or 3D model of the person.


    Racial bias in algorithms

    This week, Twitter apologised for racial bias within its image-cropping algorithm. The feature is designed to automatically crop images to highlight focal points – including faces. But, Twitter users discovered that, in practice, white faces were focused on, and black faces were cropped out. And, Twitter isn’t the only platform struggling with its algorithm – YouTube has also announced plans to bring back higher levels of human moderation for removing content, after its AI-centred approach resulted in over-censorship, with videos being removed at far higher rates than with human moderators.


    Gap between rich and poor university students widest for 12 years

    The gap between poor students and their more affluent peers attending university has widened to its largest point for 12 years, according to data published by the Department for Education (DfE).

    Better-off pupils are significantly more likely to go to university than their more disadvantaged peers. And the gap between the two groups – 18.8 percentage points – is the widest it’s been since 2006/07.

    The latest statistics show that 26.3% of pupils eligible for FSMs went on to university in 2018/19, compared with 45.1% of those who did not receive free meals. Only 12.7% of white British males who were eligible for FSMs went to university by the age of 19. The progression rate has fallen slightly for the first time since 2011/12, according to the DfE analysis.


    Quality Training

    From Raconteur. A recent report by global learning consultancy Kineo examined the learning intentions of 8,000 employees across 13 different industries. It found a huge gap between the quality of training offered and the needs of employees. Of those surveyed, 85 per cent said they , with only 16 per cent of employees finding the learning programmes offered by their employers effective.
